TMJ Disorder Diagnosis

The temporomandibular joints (TMJ) are the joints and jaw muscles that make it possible to open and close your mouth. Located on each side of the head, they work together when you chew, speak or swallow. Any problem that prevents this complex system of muscles, ligaments, discs and bones from working properly may result in a painful TMJ disorder.

Possible causes of TMJ disorders include:
  • Arthritis
  • Dislocation
  • Injury
  • Stress and teeth grinding
  • Tooth and jaw alignment
Diagnosis of a TMJ issue is an important step before treatment. The examination includes checking the joints and muscles for tenderness, clicking, popping or difficulty moving. If you feel that you are having problems with your TMJ, schedule an appointment at Scotia Glenville Dental Center right away!

Treatments for TMJ Disorders

There are several treatments for TMJ disorders. The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) recommends a simple, "less is often best" approach in treating TMJ disorders, including:
  • Avoiding chewing gum for longer than three hours
  • Avoid large sandwiches you have to stretch your mouth wide for
  • Block your yawns so you don’t overstretch your ligaments
  • Eating softer foods
  • Modifying the pain with cold packs
  • Practicing relaxation techniques to control jaw tension, such as meditation or biofeedback
If necessary for your symptoms, further treatments may be recommended, such as:
  • A night guard or bite plate to decrease the clenching or grinding of teeth
  • Exercises to strengthen your jaw muscles
  • Medications prescribed by your dentist, such as muscle relaxants, analgesics, anti-anxiety drugs or anti-inflammatory medications
In some cases, your dentist may recommend fixing an uneven bite by adjusting or reshaping some teeth. Orthodontic treatment may also be recommended. To determine the best treatment for your specific TMJ issues, call Scotia Glenville Dental Center at (518) 377-4431.
